Getting Started in HPLC
Section 0. The Language of HPLC: E
| EFFLUENT: the
liquid (mobile phase) that leaves the column.
|
||
| ELECTROCHEMICAL DETECTOR: a less common LC detector that can be very sensitive for some
compounds, such as catecholamines. The detector works by
oxidizing or reducing sample compounds.

| ELUANT: another
name for MOBILE PHASE.
|
||
| ELUTE: to wash a band from a column. Or the action of
washing from the column, as "the band eluted with a
retention time of 5.0 minutes".
|
||
| END-FITTING: the
metal part that closes off the end of the column and connects to the tubing through
which mobile phase enters and leaves the column. The end-fitting
contains a frit that keeps the packing inside the
column.

| EXTERNAL
STANDARD METHOD or EXTERNAL STANDARDIZATION:
a calibration procedure that does not add an internal
standard to the
samples to be assayed. The size of the analyte peak in the sample is compared
directly to the size of the analyte peak in the calibrator.
