k': CAPACITY FACTOR. A unit of retention that is independent of column dimensions or mobile phase flow rate. k' is calculated from the retention time (tR) and the dead time (t0) of the system:

k' = (tR - t0)/t0

Also called the RETENTION FACTOR and symbolized by k (ASTM/IUPAC standard).

KILOGRAM (Kg): a unit of weight, equal to 1000 grams or about 2.2 pounds. See Section 4B for the relationship to other units of mass.
